Mark Holdaway doesn’t just see a vehicle or a mode of transport when he looks at a hot rod, he sees an expression of art. “Each vehicle embodies a certain style, you know? We build them and design them according to how we feel about them. I’m a mechanic by trade and modern cars leave me cold, they’ve very utilitarian but they’ve got no style,” he says. It’s a unique way of looking at it, but in many ways it epitomises his love for American hot rods. “You can look at people and at their hot rod and you can put them together. I’m a cruisy sort of guy and the Willys is a cruisy car. But

Mark, who lives in Waimea West, owns a 1929 Ford Model A roadster pick-up and a 1947 Willys station wagon — both of which he’s custom-built to suit his own needs and to his own specifications. “A lot of hot rods you see nowadays look quite similar, but those two, what they are and the way they’re built, they’re very individual. The Willys
would be the only one like that in the world, with the engine and running gear I’ve put into it.” Mark will have a difficult decision on his hands this weekend, with the Nelson City Rod & Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise being held on Sunday — which hot rod does he take? The Independence Day Cruise is open to all types of American motor vehicles. Entry is $5 per vehicle. Participants need to assemble at the Nelson Suburban Club from 9:30am, and will depart from 11am. Huge retail growth Richmond’s retailers will be rejoicing after news that the town has recorded huge growth in the retail sector. The ASB Main Report records growth levels across the country and showed a 14 per cent increase for the Tasman district’s retail sector in the year’s first quarter. With most of the district’s retail based in Richmond, the town should be delighted with the news. It comes as Nelson city posted a five per cent drop in the same report. Figures released by eftpos provider Paymark for the month of May show a 4.7 per cent increase, but that includes both Nelson and Tasman. And the good news keeps on coming for Richmond, with more than 100 district health board staff moving to the town centre this week. Richmond councillor and council representative on Richmond Unlimited, Judene Edgar, says the results are exciting. “It’s really positive, because positive growth like that brings jobs into our regions,” she says. “Retailer growth shows that people have confidence. We’re in a cycle of growth as Richmond matures as a town. We now have the facilities as well as the business growth.” Story on more staff moving to town on page 3.

The longest disused railway tunnel in the country could soon become the longest cycle trail tunnel in the country. Having last week welcomed news that council had decided to retain funding for the Great Taste Cycle Trail’s development in its annual plan, Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust chair Gillian Wratt says the next stage of construction will be linking up from Wakefield to Tapawera, Woodstock and Motueka, and that could include a trip through the 121 year old Spooner’s Railway Tunnel. “If we can get the funding together what we want to do is get the route through
to the entrance of the tunnel in the next year, and then get through the tunnel the year after that,” she says. “All going well, the plan would be to have the tunnel open in a couple of years.” Located at the bottom of the Spooner’s Range, the tunnel runs in a straight line for 1352 metres and has only been used for guided tours and monthly walks after it closed in 1955 when the entire railway network shutdown in Nelson. Gillian says it’s a great local feature to include on the trail. She says the land through to the tunnel has varying owners, while the tunnel itself is controlled by Land Informa-

The trust is in negotiations with all parties over access. While the Tapawera Historical Society, who help maintain the tunnel, were initially opposed to the idea due to
worries over vandalism, custodian Bob Stewart says the tunnel “belongs to the community”. The remaining 67km on the trail is expected to cost around $2.3 million over the next three to five years.

Richmond retailers are set to receive a significant boost after the new integrated health hub employing 102 staff opened its doors in the former Network Tasman building on Queen St on Tuesday. All 55 of Nelson Bays Primary Health staff, 43 Nelson-based Public Health Service staff and four management team members of the new Maori Health organisation Te Piki Oranga have moved into the redeveloped building. And that number could increase with Primary Health chief executive Andrew Swanson-Dobbs saying there could be "opportunities" to relocate even more staff to the new hub when a new two storey extension is completed on July 1 next year. "We have a number of staff working in temporary offices out the back and they will move into the new building next year. The new building will also mean there are opportunities to move more staff out there, but there will have to be some planning to see what that looks like."

A group of volunteers behind a healing memorial pathway that pays tribute to children gone too soon, were last night recognised at the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards as the Supreme Winner. More than 230 people gathered at the Rutherford for the awards which were presented by Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Trustpower community relations manager Graeme Purches. For winning the supreme award, Project But-
terfly received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money. Project Butterfly now has the opportunity to represent the region at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards, which are being held in the Wellington region next March. Trustpower community relations representative Jess Somerville says, in a nut shell, Project Butterfly aims to help families who have suffered an unimaginable loss; the loss of a child. “This empathetic group do this by introducing them
to other people in similar situations, sending them on workshops, helping pay for counselling if need be and they also support them with cooked meals too,” she says. “It’s a project that is helping make families whole again through art, workshops, contact and introductions, and we can’t wait for them to share their story at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards.” Trustpower gave away over $5000 to various community groups during the awards, which had 110 entries.

New alcohol licences catch out sports club Richmond Athletic AFC annual quiz night has been postponed after organisers were caught out by new liquor licensing laws that require longer processing times for licence applications. The club’s annual quiz night was scheduled to be held at the Richmond School Hall this Friday, but has been postponed until August 8 to ensure it has time to get a special liquor license for the event. Club president Stu Reid says they applied for a special licence about two weeks before the quiz night but were informed by the Tasman District Council that it required 20 working days to process the application under new legislation introduced last year. “We just didn’t realise that the law had changed and we needed 20 days. It’s one of these things that is not our priority and it just snuck up on us,” Stu says. Council regulatory services coordinator Graham Caradus says they had to introduce a longer processing time of 20 working days because they are now required to include a report from police and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s medical officer of health with each application. “The medical officer of health has 10-15 days to respond and they have other priorities as well so that puts us on the back foot for a start,” Graham says. “We also find that a lot of the applications are not completed properly so there’s often a lot of to-ing and fro-ing as we sort that out.” The new legislations also require council to present applications to the District Licencing Committee, which only meets about once a week. Applications were previously completed by council staff and “could be turned around in 48 hours”. Graham says council has fast-tracked a number of applications to help out community groups and clubs but it can’t bend the rules because it is responsible for ensuring the conditions of licences are followed. All the information about applying for special licences is on the council website and Graham says most groups are aware of the new regulations. The council has only had to turn down two applications because of they didn’t allow enough time for processing since the new legislation was introduced. “We have had quite a few people ask for licences within the 20 days and we have said ‘we’ll do it this time but the legislation does specify 20 days for processing’. I think we have only said ‘no’ twice because the notice was so short so the message is getting out there.” Graham says people applying for licences should also be aware that they could reduce costs and waiting times by putting in applications for a series of events together. Stu says the quiz night is becoming increasingly popular and is now the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The campaign for “Dad’s new lungs” will get a major boost this week with three major fundraisers set to take place, and a date confirmed for the postponed quiz night. This weekend, July 5 and 6, Action Indoor Sports is hosting an indoor netball competition over two days, with all proceeds going to the campaign. Manager Vicky Collis says she’s hoping for around 20 teams, or 120 players. On Saturday night, July 5, Lotos (Last of the Old School) are holding the Mike Corkill Benefit Concert at the Richmond Town Hall. The old school rock cover band are charging $10 to get in, all going to the fundraising campaign. The concert starts at 7pm and is BYO, with the venue kindly being donated by the town hall.

It was just as well there wasn't a double booking for two shows that were held in the region at the weekend, with the National Cat Show being held at Saxton Stadium and the Nelson Bird Club's Show at Hope Hall. Saxton Stadium was a cat fancier's heaven, with a massive turnout for the National Cat Show – and not even a fire evacuation could spoil it. Rose Boulton, a member of the Nelson Cat Club, says there were “crowds and crowds” of people coming through on Sunday to check out the top pedigree cats from around New Zealand, which were being judged by an international panel. “We’re not sure how many people were through yet, because we haven’t had a chance to do the tallies, but it was just brilliant,” she says. “The venue was excellent, the crowd was excellent, and it was another really good show.” The only downside was an evacuation, which put the event on hold for about 45 minutes. There
was no fire, but cat owners were forced to put their cats in cages and take them outside while the fire service checked the venue after an alarm had gone off. On the other side of town, bird lovers flocked to the Hope Hall on Saturday and Sunday where 306 canaries, finches, love birds, budgies, British and hybrids were entered in the Nelson Bird Club's annual show. Club president Ted Griffith says they had birds from Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton, Blenheim and Nelson, although it was Richmond breeder Robbie Flowers who stole the show. Robbie, who has been breeding zebra finches for 40 years, won his third Best Zebra Finch ribbon in three shows after earlier winning at Christchurch and Ashburton. "It can take years and years to breed a champion bird, although sometimes you can fluke it straight away," Robbie says.

Board picked for Tapawera motorsport park Fundraising and design, and planning will be two of the bigger challenges for the new directors of the New Zealand Central Motorsports and Adventure Park, after they were appointed at a meeting last week. The proposed motorsport and adventure park will be constructed on a 203 hectare property at Stanley Brook owned by Nelson motorsport enthusiast Garry Adcock. It was granted a resource consent earlier this year and last Thursday about 100 people elected a board of directors at the group's first public meeting.
One of the directors Dave McLeod says they were pleased with the turn-out at the meeting which was attended by representatives from "a good cross-section of motorsports groups". "We had all the groups we thought would be there and some we didn't even know existed. Now we will be going out and listening to potential user groups and seeing what they want, and then try to provide it for them," Dave says. Dave says the next step will be to form working parties at the first board meeting

Although the park will be centred around a complex of motorsport tracks and facilities it will also include a conference centre, accommodation, a camping ground, mountainbike park and tracks, commercial premises and a variety of recreational activities. The project had been estimated to cost around $26 million although Dave says the final figure was likely to be considerably less because they could make significant savings on the race track.
There’s been a mainly positive reaction to the Prime Minister’s shock announcement to investigate building the long-talked-about Southern Link. John Key announced on Sunday that the investigation into building what would be a new state highway, would be funded by the government, prompting support from his cabinet minister and local MP Nick Smith, Nelson AA and residents online. The road, would provide a third route to the city from the Tasman district, where most of the region’s exports are grown or produced. It would mean that trucks carrying that produce could drive to Port Nelson without having to drive along the scenic Rocks Rd, leaving it clear for development.

Jazz band off to national comp Waimea College jazz musicians had a good tune up for next month’s New Zealand School of Music secondary schools jazz competition in Wellington when they took out three of the four top awards at the Nelson Youth Jazz Festival. Two big bands and seven jazz combos from Waimea College, Nayland College, Motueka High School, Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College entered the festival held at the Boatshed in Nelson on June 22. Waimea College entered four combos and they all produced top performances leading up to the national jazz competition Waimea dominated the combo section with the Pip West Quartet of Pip West, Matt Hammond, Peter Thomson and Harry Binskin winning the category ahead of a Waimea College Septet of Pip, Har-
ry, Peter, Matt, James Corcraighe, Ben Wotherspoon and Stuart Gordon, and a Waimea quartet of Harry, Matt, Jack Cooper and Liam Potts. The Pip West Quartet won the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology Music Arts Cup for Best Overall Band while their drummer, Harry, won the Nelson Jazz Festival Cup for Best Individual Performer. Peter won the Tom Rainey Cup for Best Bass Player. Music teacher Martin Emo says he was not surprised at the students’ success because they were all talented musicians who worked hard. Martin says he is spending about three and a half hours a week rehearsing with the students leading up to the national competition in Wellington while the students are also playing some private gigs.

Rainbow Ski area hopes to open for the 2014 season this Saturday, with some great new activities on field for all of the family - OR, a team building day out for your business! Workers on the field have been hard at work battling unseasonably warm conditions making snow for the Base area, and the usual swarm of Rainbow volunteers have put everything back in place and ready for action this Saturday. Rainbow Ski area has again relied heavily on their army of volunteer members to get the ski area ready for opening to the community this Saturday. Spokesman Hamish Neill says the amount of support from ALL ages is quite incredible. Volunteers put thousands of man-hours maintaining and upgrading the Ski Field every year. “This year has been no different and, weather and snow permitting, we are ready to go” “Weather leading up to the start of the season has had plenty of promise, and the usual

temperature drop is just around the corner. With that will come stacks of snow, so get ready!” This year, Rainbow plans to run fun kids’ activities on field every weekend that they are open. “We are a really family friendly field, and the facilities are perfect for kids' to have their first go at snow sports, be that skiing, boarding or tobogganing. There are great learner and kids packages for first timers, and just coming up and enjoying the mountains is for everyone" Family Day-Passes have been a real hit with families over the school holidays. Two adults and two or more of their children or grandchildren up to 17 year-old can ski on the pass, at the same price of only $190, with extra children added for only $30. Day passes have been kept as low as possible, with Rainbow adult passes costing $75 a day, $35 for children up to 17 years and seniors. Students from New Zealand and Australia can enjoy a day on the slopes for only $55, and children under seven can try their talents on the snow for free. Rainbow have introduced youth holiday training camps in 2014, available with 2 and 4 day packages that include 4 hours of lessons a day, plus day-passes and rentals. This program will really get the skill levels high for the season.
If your work group or team needs a wellearned reward, have a look at Rainbow's team building program- includes lessons, ski/boarding gear, day-passes and transport up and down the hill for you and your team mates. If you don’t have chains, or would prefer not to drive the mountain road, the Rainbow shuttle bus provides a great transport option. All cars and buses need to carry chains on the mountain road. Chains often need to be fitted to the vehicle to gain mountain access, or at the end of the day if snow has fallen. Shuttle bus services run regularly from the bottom car park, or chains can be hired, with providers listed on the Rainbow website. Rainbow boasts leading facilities, with a café on the snow serving a great range of food, from soups and pies to sweets and treats, as well as hot and cold drinks. It’s a great way to take a break from tearing up the snow and to warm your hands over a coffee and snack. Quality rental gear is available, as well as repairs and maintenance services for snow equipment. Ski and board schools offer lessons for all stages of ability. This year the team welcomes back a team of highlyqualified international instructors, and
the very popular Rainbow Development Programme for budding skiers and boarders kicks off on July 27th. Rainbow offers group lessons, private lessons, and coaching programmes to cater for all levels of skier or snow-boarder, from novice to expert. If you sign up for a group lesson you will be assessed for current ability, and then assigned to an instructor with other skiers/riders of similar ability for your lesson. Private lessons offer the opportunity for either one-on-one coaching, or a group lesson with just your family or friends, and coaching specific to your individual needs. Rainbow's skier and boarder development programmes offer promising young skiers and snow-boarders the opportunity to develop their competitive skills over the season, by participating in full day and half day sessions every Sunday. Fishing guide lends a hand in sports shop
Well-known Nelson fishing guide Tony Entwistle is back behind the counter this month but it's just for a few weeks while he lends a helping hand at Stirling Sports in Richmond. Tony has been trout fishing for most of his life, gaining a reputation as one of the country's best fishing guides after setting up his first guiding business in St Arnaud in 1980. However, Tony is also familiar with the retail side of the business owning a hunting and fishing store in Nelson from 1990 to 1999 and last week he returned to the shop floor working for his friend Dave Heyward in Stirling
Sports. "It's been good catching up with a lot of my old customers," Tony says."That was always the best thing about working in retail.” Although winter is traditionally a quiet time of the year for fishing guides, Tony says the guiding industry is recovering well after a downturn during the global recession. He estimates that the number of clients declined by around 30 per cent from 2009-2011 with an even bigger decline of 60 per cent in American clients. "We were lucky because the Australian's were still spending during that time and balanced things out. If
you had been relying exclusively on Americans you would have been struggling." Tony is helping out Dave who "is a little short-staffed" as he prepares to move premises from Queen St to the Richmond Mall. Dave says Stirling Sports Richmond will close on August 1 and reopen in the mall next to Pak n' Save "hopefully by mid to late August". The new-look Stirling Sports will be focussing on sporting footwear, apparel and equipment, while Dave says the national franchise Hunting and Fishing will be opening a new store in his Queen St premises in August.

Jesus went on to teach that when we extend a hand of welcome to people such as refugees and migrants, we are in effect welcoming him. As we approach the general election on September 20, perhaps each of us might usefully reflect on (and perhaps even research) our own connection to migration to our country. In addition, we might add our voice of compassion to any debate, and do what we can to make welcome refugees and migrants we may encounter.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Friday night’s 101-89 win over the Southland Sharks seemed more like a party than a basketball game, and all of the celebration was for just one man — Phill Jones. The 368-game veteran played his final home game for the Nelson Giants after a record breaking 19 seasons with the franchise, but he’s hoping to extend the celebration one more week as the team head into the Final Four in Wellington on Friday. “Winning the championship would be the dream scenario, the dream ending. It’d be amazing to bring the trophy back with us and hang the boots up after that,” the Giants captain says ahead of the final games of his career. “There will be some tough teams up there, so we’re going to have to play the best we’ve played all season, but if we can then I know I have ended it right.” Phill, now 40 years old, described his final game as “special”, scoring 21 points in front of a sold-out Saxton Stadium crowd, and then joining with his family
and team-mates on the court afterwards to conclude the occasion. “With these sorts of celebrations there comes a lot of pressure to perform as well. You could quite easily lose those games but we kept it into perspective and got the win. I remember looking around the crowd and seeing that there were no empty seats which was a pretty special feeling. I’m very grateful for the house to be absolutely packed.” In a decorated career, which saw him play 19 seasons for the Nelson Giants and one season for the Otago Nuggets, Phill has the most appearances in NBL history, and sits second on the list of alltime point scorers. He also played 211 times for the Tall Blacks, was a key part of the national team’s fourth placing at the 2002 FIBA World Championship, and has represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games twice. He was the second highest scorer in Athens. Phill has played professional basketball in Finland, Greece and Italy and played for the New Zealand Breakers and the Cairns Taipans in the ANBL. He also had one season with the Otago Nuggets. There are clearly many highlights, so it
was understandable that he struggled to pick out one. “There have been championships, big plays, big dunks, there’s just so many. But this, the ending here in Nelson tonight would probably be up there as well. I’ve put a lot of hard work into where I’ve got now and I can’t emphasise that enough to the young kids out there — just practice, practice, practice.” Phill says he never set out to achieve the most appearances in NBL history, he just let his career take him as far as it could go. “I’m just so grateful for the opportunities basketball has given me and the reason I’ve played for so long is because I just love it and that’ll be the hardest thing about retirement — that I’m giving up something that I love. It’s a pretty special sport and it’s going to be tough.” After, hopefully, signing his career off with another championship, Phill says the plan for retirement is work and spending time with his wife Kat and their three children. “I’ve got plenty to do.” The Fico Finance Nelson Giants take on the Wellington Saints in the semi-finals on Friday night. Tip off is at 8:30pm.

Judo club wants more members
Forty-odd years of flippin’ good fun has seen members of the Nelson Judo Club go on to compete all over the world, but its focus this month is on new members. The club has strong numbers in its adult and junior classes but is looking for more during its membership drive. Instructor Brett Grimwood says it’s a great sport for kids who are keen to improve their confidence, coordination or simply want to take the first steps of the Olympic sport. “We have kids from all over Nelson and, because
there is no kicking or punching in Judo, a lot of parents are keen for their kids to get involved.” Judo is all about take-downs and throws, and the Nelson club has current Oceania champions in its ranks, while Commonwealth Games-bound Mark Brewer used to train at the club’s dojo in the Wakatu Estate. Brett says the club is looking for any adults or kids who are keen to get involved and the first few sessions are free while people decide if they want to do it. Netball Umpires Every week in Nelson, 12 Premier, 54 Senior, 33 Collegiate, 50 Junior and 61 Future Fern teams, over 2000 players, take to the court. An integral part of the game is the umpire. For some it is their chosen sport while others are allocated weekly umpiring duties.

Talk to any of our top umpires and you will soon see that they are as passionate about umpiring as others are about playing. Maree Smith and Kate Smith are Nelson’s top umpires, both have New Zealand B ranking and Kate is currently part of the Netball New Zealand Emerging Talent Squad. While Kate says the top umpires are grateful of the support from Nelson Netball, essentially it is self-funded. Kate and Maree, to date, have officiated at the Super Club Tournament, Queen’s Birthday Squad Tournament in Christchurch, and an Under 19 and U23 Tournament in Auckland. Kate Smith has been appointed to NZ tournaments in Dunedin and Annie Ewers-Kennedy to the NZ U 17 Tournament in Auckland. The “Smith Ladies” also travel to Wellington to umpire Premier games – with the stadium practically next door to the airport, they fly in, umpire and fly out again. These opportunities are practically self-funded, and the experience is necessary to be able to step up to the next level. Just as players aspire to test themselves against stronger and more skilled players, umpires need the experience of officiating players at a higher level. Believe it or not, umpires are not looking for mistakes in games – their job is to apply the

rules of the game. They need to look at a game freshly and they strive to have position, vision and timing in sync well enough to rule on it. Nelson is fortunate in having a number of New Zealand C umpires in Julie McGrath, Brenda Thomson, Deb Vincent, Vicki Reid and Lisa Stove. While Nelson appears to be well endowed with qualified umpires, they are at present massively short on numbers - particularly for the higher grades. Nelson has lost the services of accomplished umpire Mary Ellis, who has retired, and Myron Elkington who has transferred to Wellington. And what happens when an umpire retires? Some will continue to coach as they have a huge amount of knowledge to share with the less experienced. Val Fitzsimmons is a prime example as she continues to offer her services as a coach and mentor. While Andy Vincent may have hung up his whistle, he is still actively involved in the sport. While Nelson is in a re-building phase they are looking to identify umpires coming through the ranks and are offering support, training and personal coaching. There is a pathway to tertiary education as well, with Mainland umpires eligible for Lincoln scholarships. It’s about identifying the balance in their life with passion to play, umpire and educate. A Marlborough umpire has recently completed her
four years study on a scholarship. If you would like more information, seek Andy out at the courts and he will point you in the right direction. Marilyn Milne oversees the younger umpires and has two groups who umpire Future Ferns games on Wednesday s and Saturdays. After recruiting at the beginning of the season she now has a full complement. These young umpires have a 15 minutes coaching session before games start, which can cover rules or just general support. Marilyn also looks after a Junior Squad where the ultimate goal is to give the youngsters the tools and confidence to sit their umpire’s exam. Last year, eight juniors were successful in the Local Theory, with five going on to attain their Local Practical. Marilyn is also Nelson’s Umpire Draw Steward and anyone interested in umpiring on Saturday should contact her on 546 5483. If you have umpired before and perhaps are not available every Saturday, you will still be welcomed with open arms. As part of Nelson Building Society’s ongoing relationship with Nelson Netball, the local umpires have been outfitted in a speciallydesigned Nelson umpire top. The Future Ferns umpires can be seen in their new bright pink t-shirts and are well hydrated from their NBS bottles.

A big crowd watched some tight racing in Brightwater over the weekend as some of the top local motocross riders went handlebar-to-handlebar at the Nelson Flat Track Champs. Nelson rider Bryan Heaphy took out the Leith McConochie Memorial Trophy for top local rider home in the feature race at champs, while Marlborough’s Steve Lange took home the Keith Sinclair Cup. Co-organiser Dan Shallcrass says it was a great two days of racing. “We had a really good turnout of spectators and plenty of new faces so we were really happy with that. The promotion in the Weekly worked really well.” More than 100 riders competed at the event with Vinnie Thompson finishing second in the mini unclutched, Luke Heaphy finished second in mini clutched, Milan HealyFurniss finishing second in junior 125 and Jackson Walker third in that race. A 5-2 win over Nelson Suburbs first XI has moved Richmond Athletic closer to the top of the table. It was just AMI Suburbs’ third loss of the Nelson Pine Industries division one season. Waimea Old Boys Rugby Waitohi ‘the perfect test’ before semi SG
Waimea Old Boys co-coach Mark Milne has no problems with playing Waitohi last. The Picton club have already claimed the Bayleys Tasman Trophy with one round to spare and are yet to be beaten in 2014. But Mark says this Saturday’s challenge, which could see Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys seal second place in the competition if they win, is the perfect lead-in to the Car Company division one semi-final seven days later. “They’ve been the most consistent side throughout the whole competition, so we’re keen to see where we are at leading into our semi finals of our own local

We dropped a couple of games early in the Tasman Trophy and that cost us at the end of the day. But this is great preparation for us.” Waimea Old Boys players and fans would have had their fingers crossed that another team could have helped them out and knocked over Waitohi at some point
during the season, but Saturday’s win over Central was enough to hand them the title with a week to spare. “We had hoped to head into this game with an opportunity and to treat it like a final, so that was the focus. But a wider focus was also that this will be a great run into our semi-final.” Waimea Old Boys are one of the form teams in the Tasman Trophy competition, and again piled on the points at the weekend, beating Awatere 90-7. Having lost two of their first three games, they have gone on to win seven in a row. So Mark is understandably pretty happy with how things are going with the local playoffs
looming. “We don’t put a massive emphasis on being at full capacity for game one of the season and we were a little bit slower this year. But we are reasonably happy. We’ve enjoyed the Tasman Trophy and our trips to Blenheim, and we’ve played some pretty consistent footy, which is great.” It is almost certain that Waimea Old Boys will face Wakatu Marist in the semi-final next week and, even though they somehow lost to Stoke on the weekend, Marist have beaten Waimea Old Boys every time they have met this season. Abel Tasman National Park Possum and Rat Control Operation As part of the Project Janszoon ecological restoration of Abel Tasman National Park, the Department of Conservation (DOC) and Project Janszoon are planning aerial pest control to protect the park’s native species from rising rat and possum numbers. This pest control is essential for native species recovery and ecosystem restoration. The DOC Motueka Office and Project Janszoon intend to apply non-toxic pre-feed cereal baits during the first period of fine weather on or after the 21st of July, followed 5 or more days later by baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) over the following area of the national park and the Moncrieff Private Reserve. Description of the area 12,359ha bounded by a line from the Awapoto Hut to Awaroa Inlet in the north, the Pikikiruna range in the west, the Inland track from Wainui Saddle to Tinline Bay in the south, and out to the coast in the east; but excluding the Abel Tasman Coast Track and 100m wide each side of it. The Marahau and Upper Takaka catchments are not affected. Large exclusion zones have been placed around the Torrent Bay and Awaroa townships. During the operation all inland tracks will be closed, but the Coast Track will remain open for use. Method of Control
